• Typical cliche story TBH, for isekai genre there's no twist at all... and now it depend on the character, i just hope MC isn't trying to hiding his power or dense motherfucker..I mean, if you make your MC OP, why would you bother hide it? Take example of Makoto, Rudeus Greyrat or Ainz..

  • Well from a writing perspective, having a single OP character do nothing but be strong would be boring.

    From a personal perspective, being strong means you get roped into all sorts of trouble, so you'd want to avoid showing off unless you intend to take responsibility(or rather, have it thrust upon you) for some large world-affecting faction/event/etc.

  • I agree with Psychronia.
    Also, about Ainz. He doesn't actually "hide" his power. When he does so, it's for a specific objective that makes sense(either infiltration or to give a false sense of security to a strong opponent(aka Shalltear). As for other situations, he's either challenging himself by giving himself restrictions in what he can use(ex: to get better with swords and close combat), or he does so in order to regulate himself. For example, while he wants to show his overwhelming power, he still wants to unite the world/nations around him. This is why he hid the fact that he could use "Ia Shub-Niggurath" repeatedly without consequence(though with intervals between uses) and quite easily. He doesn't want to rule only fear, and he doesn't want the nations to make a desperate stand to the death against him, so he just showed overwhelming power, with (fake) limitations that don't make him any weaker, but instead make it so that they don't think he can genocide entire countries in mere moments.

    My last point would be how when he fights, he doesn't use his strongest spells because he instead use the minimum power needed to still absolutely win.
    In short, it's not that he holds back or hide his power, but more so that he doesn't go "too" overkill. He only uses the right amount needed for his objectives. (and it lets him keep his numbers of "spell uses per day" for his best spells in case he ends up needing them)

      You're always using overly abundant items that are way too strong for ordinary encounters, causing you to perpetually feel like you're wasting power overkilling things and it's boring and awful.

  • wait, I just realized that I'm not sure about what you meant in your comment anymore. Do you mean that an OP mc should be like Ainz in the choice of power usage, or do you mean that Ainz is an example of an MC that hides his power?

    Same question for Makoto(since he technically still hold back when fighting and still hide his magic power to the point where people who look at him think he he weak, I'm not sure about which you mean).

    As for Rudeus, I just looked the name up, and I haven't read Mushoku Tensei yet, so I don't know.

  • in mahouka koukou no rettousei, there was a serious and definitely legit reason for Tatsuya (the aforementioned ln's mc) to hide his power. more than one in fact. 1: he was a literal military secret himself. 2: he held power that could NOT be replicated to begin with. 3: he was still a student even though he was so op of a person, to name a few of those reasons.

    • oh and people still attempted to replicate his ability, even though it couldn't be done via magic, like his power was doing. he literally made a nuclear bomb blast with no fallout. The USA equivalent of mahouka koukou no rettousei's world tried, thinking it was a black hole type phenomena, and technically blew a hole in reality creating bodyless souls, it seems, which those took control of some of their magicians who were apparently high ranking. This is why you don't fuck with things you don't understand to put it simply lol.

• I proppose that now that you are starting this new project, whenever a new character appears, that someone makes something like a wikia, with characters names, first appearences, and pictures (fanmade or not). It happens so often that i forget who is who.
