Rosalie made it seem like his Spirit user skill wasn't just Water spirits, and that he should have been able to use Fire too, I guess the only limit is his own effort. He's gotta start raising the other proficiency levels.
It's been clearly demonstrated though, that he can use spirits other than water. The issue is spirits seem to love pranking him while he's still unaware of them. Exhibit A would be the gryphon incident (which is confirmed later during the attack on Makkaren), another would be when he was still learning spirit magic, which ends with him and Emily getting drenched.
So yeah, basically spirit magic allows him to use the power of any spirit. Water magic allows him to use water magic (duh) and see water spirits (by raising his proficiency), facilitating the use of water elemental spirit magic.
The problem is, how is he going to raise the other proficiency without the related skill?
Those early examples were him using Spirit Language to force the nearby spirits to do his bidding, he couldn't even see them at the time, so maybe he needs to try talking to the other, still invisible to him, elemental spirits. Just use them blindly until he gets some proficiency to work with.
How much proficiency is enough to be considered "some proficiency to work with" though? IMO, that'd be 105 proficiency, which is hardly some. 105 since it's only at that point can Makoto start seeing the related spirits, and he really doesn't have any other skills to work with (otherwise, the whole blind training idea wouldn't be necessary). I don't imagine it'd end up well for him.
He doesn't see them at 105, some proficiency to work with is literally just some proficiency, just a few levels so it actually shows up in his spirit book.
He does, at least for water spirits. And nothing given so far imply anything different about the other spirits. Only that there are other ways to see spirits beside proficiency, contracts being one of them.
And serious question : what is even the point of proficiency if it's neither enough to see the related spirit or accompanied by the appropriate skill? Even assuming that proficiency can be brute-forced using Spirit Magic, it would mean grinding blind until he can see the spirits, with the attendant risks.
There's a limit to the contracts one can have, and the only other ways he's seen spirits involved synchronizing with stronger magic users. Raising his proficiency to 105, like you say, should let him see the other spirits on his own. He technically should be seeing more than Fire Spirits whenever he's around Lucy as it is, she has affinities for all magic, after all.
Yeah, it does raise a question as to why Lucy only let him see fire spirits. It might have to do with how she's only really trained in fire (her earth magic is coming along quickly, but that's recent). Maybe once she's better at the other elements Makoto would also be able to see other spirits.

The incident with Emily wasn't a prank though. Makoto was using Spirit Language at the time, which was essentially a "command" to the Spirits, and the Spirits do not like being ordered around. Metaphorically speaking, he was being annoying and the Spirits smacked him upside the head to vent their irritation.
I think he might freeze himself in ice and return to the present the long way round.
But then the time spirit flag would have been for nothing
He could also use both of them. Maybe he won't be able to use Time Spirits properly, and he will only be able to slow down his time like 20 times slower. A combination of freezing+stopping his own time might be useful.
Do you remember the coffin inside the great sage's house. That is quite fit to the plot.
Maybe his RPG Player skill will keep him awake during that time, and he will wake up with a thousand years of uninterrupted magic practice...?
It would be hilarious if he goea back in time and then immediately comes in through the front door saying, "did you miss me?" While holding the Great Sage.

Hmm so now we have confirmation that time spirits exist.....What are the odds that getting sent back in time somehow enables Makoto to learn Time related magic and so he just madly trains that prof up like he did with Water magic to the point he can basically become a time spirit and uses that to come back to the present? It feels real Chekov's gun here introducing time spirits like this lol.

Makoto can't come back to the present, huh. I know a light novel where the main character stops his own time to return to his era, so I guess it will be something similar. Another option would be to abandon his humanity and transform himself into a race that has a long lifespan (vampire maybe ?, half-spirit ?).

I'm aware of Tsubame Gaeshi's mechanics, Koujiro swings a sword three times in one breath (then saber and the narrator comment on how that is obviously bs), and he cuts a very large swallow called the time-space continuum.

Guys your forgetting something like, makoto can't use other elements besides water cause you know makoto doesn't have a affinity for time and space. If forcefully controls it. It cause something like in the Griffon arc makoto controls fire which he don't have affinity from. Unless noah gives him an affinity to time and space then time travel back again to the present would be possible

Remember how Anna got rejected by Abel who goes somewhere unknown?
Anna chased him after finished some of her works in building a country, by freezing herself (since she's not an immortal). The alternative plan of this is clearing that dungeon who rewards immortality after all.
Also I don't think Makoto=Abel, but some part of Makoto exploits were fused into the legends of Abel (Remember how Great Sage said that Abel is a cautious hero? Makoto is the type of gamer to clear preparations and side quests before facing down Bosses)
