Chapter 157: The Devil’s change, the awakening of the hero, an intruder appears

I know what you guys are thinking: “Dayum this update was so late”. Well, I have a reason for this, aside from the fact that the chapter is longer than usual. It is because I was suddenly told I will be going on a trip. The paperwork I had to do was no joke.

This also brings me to my next topic. This trip is 2 months long, meaning 2 months of hiatus. And it will begin at the 23.

This is really important and I don’t want to leave Tsuki stale for 2 months. That’s why I will be temporarily passing the baton. If someone wants to take it, you can send me an email. Better if it is within the 23, but there’s no real limit.

If possible, I would like to interfere with it, but sadly, the thing in front of me won’t let me do so.

I know the basics of how to move my body, but I don’t have experience in martial arts.

This black skin is insufficient against him huh.

I can’t do a satisfactory evasion in time.

His kick connected at my flank and was atrociously gouged out.

I felt like screaming at the intense pain.

But my eyes reflected the figure of that guy that is landing at my back.

If it’s in that stance filled with openings, I can use the combo attack that crushed Hibiki!

The white guy poured on Io an attack that looked like the ones special effect heroes do in commercials.

When I think that Io still had a lot of leeway left, I felt my emotions growing darker.

As I thought, maybe to truly defeat Io, there’s the need of a big attack.

That is something I ‘still’ don’t have.

Io grabs the white guy and just like that, as if drawing an arc, he threw him onto the ground.

That’s it.

I had a hunch.

The combo attack I received where I felt like I was going to die and was unable to maintain my clad state with Horn.

I was able to instinctively clad it again, so I was saved, but it was an attack that wouldn’t be strange for me to die.

“Hey there, Larva rear guard. Your master is in a pinch, you know?” (Hibiki)

Within the barrier, I call Larva who has stopped his aria.

“Unnecessary. Rather, you should make sure not to make master feel at a lost with that severe exposure. Prepare something to wear” (Shiki)

“?!! You said that we shouldn’t leave the barrier you made, so isn’t that cruel?” (Hibiki)

“Fumu. Then I will randomly search something for you. Wait for a bit. Seventh step, ‘Hell’ half-release. Equipping and activating” (Shiki)

A disgusting presence as if blocking my breath was spreading.

With his Lich form, he is standing still with 5 rings worn in all the fingers of his left hand.

Hibiki has a big mantle covering her body that Shiki obtained who knows where.

The healing has already been done, and they are unable to move away from this place because of Shiki’s glare and words.

They were surprised by the out-of-norm fight, and for Hibiki, she really wanted to go repel the demon race forces that are rampaging in the castle and the town.

The current situation is that it is gradually turning worse.

“… You came out unscathed from that huh. Seriously, you aren’t a superior dragon or a spirit inside that suit right? I even feel like there’s more than one inside. A guy I can’t tell the nature of” (Io)

As if the fight had returned to its initial stage, Io, who felt the meek atmosphere of Makoto, said this as if amazed.

Even when its identity was revealed, Io didn’t show any agitation at all.

On the other side, Makoto narrowed his brows.

Well, in his current state where his face is hidden, no one would be able to tell his expression though.

“… Did you make your subordinates carry it as well?” (Makoto)

“It is a battle which many soldiers would be lost after all. It was dangerous to let hyumans hold it, but at first the objective was mainly to collect it. Fortunately, it seems like it takes time to purificate this, so I was relieved when we were able to gather quite the amount. “Gugh!! I see, this is dreadful. This swelling of power. What’s wrong? I will have you accompany me, white guy!” (Io)

“Io, your subordinates are already dea– weakened through the power of Larva. They can’t move properly” (Makoto)

“… The hyumans as well, right? Even if I look like this, I am able to do something like understanding the state of the battlefield. “Of course. My brethrens that are welling up with power will stand up once again, and will slaughter all the hyumans that can’t move. We won’t steal and won’t violate. But, we will kill our enemies. As long as it is alive, it doesn’t matter if it’s men or women of any age. If you want to stop it, I don’t mind you leaving here. I still have my mission of killing the hero after all. I won’t chase you” (Io)

“The war must end in a win, or it will be pointless huh. If all the soldiers that are attacking here have this kind of mentality as well… they are a threat” (Makoto)

“To think that you would think that way, I am happy. Demon General Io, forward!” (Io)

Makoto grasped that the capital which was gradually turning silent, became enveloped in chaos again.

But the sacrifices that will be created right now, they are sacrifices that can be stopped.

If the white guy is going to stop the demon general, it is plenty possible to stop the demon army that has turned into death soldiers, is what she thinks.

Outside the box answer would be that Makoto’s blessing allowed him to make his own world, so he is now the being that greets awakened “travelers” and gifts them with a power…in his world only, though.

Even if he wanted more power, he could just fake suicide with his bow techniques again. This is just how I thought of the conditions of meeting the deity.

        1. Okay, I have to get this off my chest before I go into things. Ignore the second paragraph for my thoughts in Hibiki.

          What’s with all the ellipses? At first I waa giggling because I verbalize things and it became a verbal tic of trailing in and out of conversation that made a really hammy, dramatic monologue my brain even added the Godfather theme to. Then it became one of those really gloomy anime characters that always muttered to themselves. Then it felt like I’m just missing something. I always associated trailing off or on with ellipses, but…is it supposed to be something different?

          Anyway, my take on Hibiki has always been that she was the “good guy” in a story. People are talking about “Pride” abd “Envy” but none of that applies to her because we’re using them in the context of fatal sins that cause downfall. Pride or Greed can be attached to Tomoki because he was willing to kill someone (Tomoe) when he felt personally offended and wanted to make Sophia his despite her dangerous actions.

          Hibiki has no such fatal flaws that threaten to bring her to ruin. Her flaws aren’t because of vices; they can primarily be summed up as “she’s too weak to accomplish her goals” and “she’s ignorant”. Ignorance could be spun into Pride if she refuses to acknowledge that she’s wrong to the point of self-destructively distorting her perception of reality (al la that justice freak in a certain shield hero story) but she’s shown no such behavior so far.

          My interpretation of the 7 sins are that they either become an unavoidable Achilles Heel that lead to downfall, or consume a character’s every moment.

          As for whether or not Hibiki is selfish…I can’t say. The reason she agreed to be sent here was basically because she was bored after all.
          But her actions and attitude are primarily heroic. When she sees suffering, she’s compelled to help. When she sees something as “wrong”, she’s compelled to fix it. So far she’s been limited in her ability to do so, but that’s how her motivations have been presented so far. Certainly, that she’s going to interfere in what’s not her business makes her a bit arrogant, but that’s in itself a fundamental requirement of heroism.
          Any intentional acts of good have to be based on the arrogance to believe you know what’s good and what’s evil.

      2. So many ellipses….my eyes…

        1) “Pride” does not mean you cannot accept that someone is higher than you. Look at Olympic athletes. I guarantee every one of them has “pride” but they also know there is a clear ranking of who is better. “Pride” can push them to work harder, to try and beat the other person. But that is a different issue.

        2) Just because Hibiki does not like Tomoki does not mean she feels “envy.” “Envy” means she sees what Tomoki has and wishes she had it too. In the case of being annoyed when Tomoki is talked about, it COULD be “envy” or it could be the same kind of reaction you get when you talk about cockroaches at dinner. IIRC, Hibiki does not like Tomoki, because she notices people acting strangely when Tomoki is around (i.e., Brainwashed).

        3) You’re using the word “selfish” too easily. Just because you would like people to help you, does not make you “selfish.” A “selfish” person is someone who put their desires first. She asked Mio to help her, but when Mio said “no,” she accepted it. In other words, Hibiki had a selfish desire, but she is not a selfish person. Likewise, her desire to change the country’s government is “self-centered” because she isn’t considering that she might be wrong, but she does it out of a desire to help OTHER people. She’s a “Hero,” reforming the government does not benefit her in anyway.

        4) You say Makoto isn’t heartless, but Hibiki is? Where do you get that? Hibiki cares about her comrades, her friends,….that’s the very opposite of heartless. And while Tsukuyomi helped out Makoto, the GODDESS helped out Hibiki and Tomoki.

        People can have different opinions, but we can debate about facts. And in this case, we are arguing about the definitions of what is “envy”? What is “selfish”? What is “pride”? And at least in the English language, that’s where you are making the mistakes.

    5. we can argue that the disgust for makoto is either envy for his power, or pride because as limia’s hero she should be superior to an weird guy who don’t even name himself.

      hibiki hate tomoki. if you want to understand why, reread the arc “stella fort”, especially chapter 68. even chiya, shown as pure hearted, didn’t like him.

      she want to reform the kingdom to make a better government for the citizen, it’s charity.
      it would be selfish if she wanted to overthrow the government, so she can become the head of the state and to obtain power and privileges for her own luxury.

      I don’t think the someone with her responsabilities should easily turn a blind eye on a military power as great as mio, and I think she should try her best to recrute her.

      In what way it is selfish to try to close the distance between mamono and human? was it stupid to abolish the racial segregation because white and black people had bad relationship?

    1. Well, to be precise, Makoto is a Hyuman that grew up on Earth without the benefits of Le Bug Goddess protection. Since his parents are both Hyuman there’s little chance of him being human. One could say he’s a hyuman with human-like resistances.

      However, the Hyuman race is supposed to be a degraded version of humans made by Le Bug. How closely they resemble humans is currently still up in the air, because aside from the weakened stats, multiple blessings from Le Bug, one of which is likely outward beauty, and the inability to converse with other races, they look and act very much like a human would.

The contrast between easily-replaced minor characters dying in droves with hardly a footnote to mark their passing and the repeated escapes from certain death for major characters cranks the Plot Armor to absurd levels. Someone important has to die soon or the entire conflict will start to induce apathy in the reader. In fact, now that we know that the main characters will gain super-god powers, the entire war between Hyumans and Daemons is now largely irrelevant.

Both sofia and Io are important for the story in their own right. the story itself does not cater only to the MC, it tells what is happening in the world that does not related to the MC. also even if Both heroes have super-power up, if Makoto the one who is close to goddess sides with the demon army, their power will be the one who arguably irrelevant.

        as for the death, both in Sofia and Io’s case wont do much apathy other than apathy for Makoto himself because he killed he dont want to kill. in Io’s case he even want to get along with him. but it still wont do much apathy because they rarely ever having a spotlight.

        a character can be saved because the threat to his/her dead is no longer exist. if Io somehow be teleported somewhere or the demon army surrender without his order for example, Makoto will have no reason to kill him and therefore the threat to his dead is gone. in reality Makoto could also beat Io unconcious without killing him. Sofia and lancer as well but probably they are harder since well… Sofia seems to be more reckless than Io and now she still have some poison within her iirc,

        a plot armor is when a character is supposed to be killed or lose no matter how you look at it but somehow survive and even possibly win with sudden convenient situation happening.

        its not a plot armor if people are saved within logical reason. if we see reality as another form of fiction, then everytime someone important in a country or for people was in dangered and saved, its a plot armor then. but no, in reality many people can be saved without “sudden convenient situation” that comes out from nowhere

      2 hibiki power in this stage is more like a power up, or a overboost, and she did real good on this one, because her mp will recover after every use, so no side effects at all, but tomoki, that dude have a death wish, or hes really planing to become immortal, the power he choose is ok but a total user killer.
      3 they wont notice because makoto is out, since he should be running and cleanning the city from monsters, rotsgard stil thinking they are under heavy atack so he can go missing for 1 or 2 days and no one can argue, and the godness assault, fall over the castle and fight io just took just some minutes till now, so they should be back in the morning when everything ends. Not like it will end the way you think but you got the idea.

      1. Well I read it like that they had to pay a price to get the power. Like for instance he say’s that if she wants the power to travel in time she would die at the age of 30 + each time she used it she would lose a year of her remaining life, with each time traveling to the same point costing more and more. A way to counter this power was to stop being human and get an infinite lifespan so losing “life force” wouldn’t matter anymore.

        Instead she chose a power that cost a little bit of her magic power, but from my understanding works like a passive power in the way that the more people that believe in her to be a hero/savior/whatnot the stronger she get’s. So it’s kinda like a belief power in the way that the more believers she has the stronger she is but the moment people lose their faith in her she doesn’t get anything from the power anymore.

        I dont get however how from the start we are told that magic power is fixed from the start. In the way that people cant get more magic power, but they can get better at controling/using it. Which was so special about Makoto in the way that when he is practicing his archery he goes into a kind of state that kills himself and then brings him back to life which can be used to indefinitely increase his magic power. Which was why he was told by Tomoe to stop doing it because she was afraid of what would happen if he got to strong of a magic power and that even the godess would start to fear him/try to remove him because of it.

        This was also why the fruit from Asora was pointed out to be so special because eating the fruit would give a small boost in a persons magic power which if the hyumans knew would start a craze and they would try to seize all the fruits, and probably try to invade Asora / The wasteland(since they think Asora is in the wasteland) so they could control where it is made.

        But here the new god/power say’s “The price was only to decrease her amount of magic power, so it is something she would soon get back anyways”. I dont know what the author is doing here since he had already done ALOT of chapters saying how pretty much impossible it is to increase magic power by even a little bit, which makes Makoto such a cheat since he can and makes Asora so special because it produces food that increases magic power. Shiki for instance is shown like his magic power was way to weak to form even the lowest form of pact with Makoto so they used the cursed rings that were fully charged with Makoto’s magic power to “cheat” the pact system by having Shiki wear rings so that it thought that he had more magic power then he actually has. Then the rings are absorbed into his body and becomes a part of him. However again it is pointed out that Shiki was not actually given an increase in magic power, since the magic power is not his, he could only learn how to control the magic power of the rings to increase his own magic power. However it is still not an increase in his magic power because he is only able to use the magic power in the rings like an equipment and not truly make it a part of his own magic power.

        Maybe im just a stickler for rules that the author’s makes for their worlds but I am not a fan of when they spend multiple chapters saying this is how it works and this is like one of the ground rules of how the world works. Then just for convenience sake, (in this case the hero appearing to get weaker which is not okey) they just ignore/smash it just because.

        However the more people that believe in her the stronger she becomes and the more magic power she has.

        So what the guy was saying is that its true that she will lose total magic power however because of the powerup it will offset this loss and as more people believe in her she will make up the difference.

    3. I don’t think it’s Root. First off, Hibiki’s soul was summoned to a place in a manner that felt “similar to the Goddess”. Root is powerful, but not god-level powerful.

      Secondly, this entity knows way too much about the forces that govern the universe, particularly the interaction between worlds. Root knows about cross world-travel, but there’s no way s/he could know that much; remember s/he said leaving the New World was impossible, a contradiction of what this guy just said.

      1. raido settled all the things he had to do in rogstar before being summoned, he was summoned at night and around 30min ago. I don’t think they will notice him before morning, but he will probably return before that.

    – I wonder who is that mysterious being summoning the heroes into the void realm and granting them their desired powers. whatever it is, baing able to whimsically do things like that must be in the realm of the gods. An evil god maybe?
    – Makoto is about to de-henshin (I wonder if that’s the right word for it) into his usual self and unleash his magics. I know that he is still not going to use his full power, but this is going to be great! Hell, the hero is no longer there so Makoto might change his mind and use full power. It’s fine if there’s no witness right?
    – Hibiki’s new power is interesting. Turning people’s faith in her into power. Being charismatic and all, that’s a good power to accompany her natural disposition. She really got a good head on her shoulders. Now I wonder, if she can make all the people in the world believe in her, can she be strong enough to fight Makoto? I personally think Makoto is still beyond her reach though, MC is too OP lol.

    2 months of hiatus is quite the long one. Stopping the chapters at the climax of the arc really die down the excitement and the anticipation that we got for the story 2 months later. I really hope we can at least finish the arc before stopping for a while, I don’t know how many chapters remaining for this arc though.

    Whatever it is, just do what you can, I’m already thankful for all the releases so far. No pressure, go and do your work with a peace of mind. I’ll just hope there’s someone else would help you for this 2 months. If there’s none then so be it.

      Like the last boss is so OP, you get a one hit kill and then defeated. Next you’ll get a strange power welling up because of the people having faith in you, the more the faith the more power you’ll get. That kind of power has a incredible weakness if you ask me, just by having trashmoki use he’s charm eye, Hibiki’s new power is already sealed just like that lol

    2. Depending on the details, it could be awesome or utterly worthless. How much power does each believer contribute? How much does it scale, does it have a hard cap? How large is the transmission range? Is there any attenuation over distance?

      Remember, a god-tier power needs to consider other god-tier opponents. That opponent could strip Hibiki of her power by simply killing everyone around her with a magical nuke. Shiki could do it, so it’s entirely within the power of another Hero in their True Form.

      2. Consider for a moment that modern irl guerilla warfare works like Hibiki’s power; their strength depends on the support of the local populace. That is why counter-insurgency warfare (COIN) requires “winning the hearts and minds” of the locals. But the other method of defeating with guerillas is to simply kill everyone, using WMDs like nerve gas and Area Denial Weapons like fuel air explosives and herbicides to make the land unlivable for any survivors. No populace, no support, no strength for the enemy guerillas.

      3. Should the 2 hero ever fought,

        Tomoki’s power also have possibility to counters her power up

        it has been shown actually, even for the slightest they believe in tomoki more than hibiki when they first meet tomoki and Hibiki sounds her doubt for him.

        now Tomoki shouldn’t do much even with his charm power, but if the potency goes up dramatically then its possible that he can even disrupt the hearts of people who believe in Hibiki even though they themselves may not admit it nor act for it.

        like its not for betrayal, but their heart may lose believe in Hibiki and believe more in Tomoki even if they still fight for Hibiki against Tomoki.

        + there are many Limia nobles and inners who have negative view in Hibiki. since her power is “the concept people place in her” wont that means she make the positive feelings people have for her become her strength… and the negative feelings people have for her become her downside?….

        does that mean she will weaken if surrounded by people who hate her? or against her?

    7) is the strongest dragon so can give powers to other because there is a risk on the contrary of the power of goddess(probabily connected to Adventure guild)

      2. From the dialogue, it sounds like the Entity “shapes” the power of the outworlders, not enhance it with a contract. I don’t like it, as it smacks of Deus Ex Machina, but whatevs. This is usually what the Hero’s Journey is for; self-realization and a manifestation of power that reflects this enlightenment. Instead, it’s done by a third party. Meh.

  128. What’s this power system Makoto suddenly brings up? How many steps are there? What do these steps correspond to (e.g. Kiloton, Meter, Atmospheres, Celsius)? The author could have explained this earlier when things weren’t so hectic, like the rings. It’s also kind of relevant, so I can’t just overlook it.

    Io comes across as a bit of an incompetent; how does a “seasoned warrior” not recognize “hot” and “cold” battle fury? And why would he go for a kick if Makoto is outside of his threat range? Not only that, martial arts moves are adaptable; if the target moves, the martial artist can change the technique midway and connect. I’ve personally experienced this while sparring.

    “Moreover, synergy with the gauntlet’s elements. …he went from wind to fire; fire to earth; earth to water; is how it flowed in order to increase the power of the elements.” HOW THE HELL DOES THIS EVEN WORK?! It’s not from the Taoist Xingyi; it uses 5 elements. Anyone know?

    When Io realizes that his mission has failed, he sends a signal that drives his troops into a suicidal frenzy. WAT. The author tells us that the daemons are all tactical and shit, but they act like morons. So what if the daemons manage to kill all the enemy soldiers in the capital? THEY’RE HERE TO KILL THE HERO. If they can’t do that, then they should retreat, regroup and look for another opportunity, not throw away elite troops in a pointless “fuck you” to Limia. Sacrificing his life to buy enough time to allow his troops to evacuate are more in line with what the author tells us about Io’s character, but instead we get… this.

    Too much about “what” is said in dialogue, and how enough about “how” it is said. This is especially glaring when Hibiki pleads with Shiki/Larva to let her go.

    Hibiki’s attempt to break the Shiki’s barrier was plain stupid. Had she succeeded, she would have been helpless to prevent Shiki from killing her companions afterwards. She also knew he wasn’t mercifully inclined towards her party; he could have simply killed her companions for annoying him even after she failed.

    1. maybe those elements saying are those elements in his gauntlets each have and pound makoto with each element the gauntlet have in order?

      1. Maybe. The author treats it as something that should be obvious, but I have no clue. I don’t think it’s a Japanese cultural, religious or gaming trope. This entirely central to Io’s fighting moves that it’s really, really hard to ignore. If his punches are so powerful with this technique, why bother kicking at all? Or are his feet surrounded by elemental magic?

      3. Now that I think about it, a move best suited for “Mr. Martial Artist” Io is the “Ground and Pound” often seen in many MMA matches. Consider:

        Io already smashed Makoto into the ground.

        Io outweighs Makoto by orders of magnitude, as he is a giant.

        Io has 4 fists, which are his strongest weapons.

    3. -isn’t the steps just a name for shiki’s rings? the 7th step would be the ‘Hell’ power, but to use it he need to active the 4 others rings that have enhancing power (magic empowerment, body enhancement, magic power enhancement, equipment enhancement). that’s how I understood it.

      -don’t know about martial art, but you sound convincing.

      -don’t know, is the 5th element a true element or was it the hidden dagger?

      -yeah, it didn’t made sense. I though his roar sound the retreat, it don’t make sense to make a suicide attack now… I agree Io staying behing to gain time for his retreat make more sense. I think the whole thing for to show makoto using a “mass dispel” afterward. I can be wrong tho

      -hibiki could have easily obtain to shiki to release her teammate since she was the only one he had to protect, and try later to escape alone with no more hostage used shiki, and knowing that even if she didn’t manage to escape, her teamate are still acting and protecting the city.

    4. I will try to explain how Io’s combo works as I understand it.

      Magic Element, in this WN, does not immediately dissipate or disappear immediately. Like for example when Makoto used water element magic, it creates ice or a blue colored miasma representing the attribute of water, and that stayed for quite a while for the survivors to be able to witness it and call it “beautiful”. Some demons even turn to ice(hence they gain the attribute of water :P).

      And according to Hibiki, wind element magic increases the fire, so we can conclude that magic attributes work the same way as in Naruto.

      So it goes like this, Io uses wind, then adds fire into the mix, then earth, then water. This supposedly increases the elemental damage exponentially.

      As for Io ordering his men to do commit into a suicidal attack, the reason is quite simple:

      7th step: Mist Temple, Nivlheim….

      That spell practically made every single living thing, both demon and hyuman( with the exemption of those inside the audience hall) in the entire city invalids. Makoto himself mentioned it, they are so weak that they cannot move. Io knows this fact through thought transmission, he mentioned this himself

      The demons can neither attack nor retreat, they are basically at the mercy of Makoto and Shiki/Larva.

      Io also recognized the fact that he cannot defeat Makoto with his current strength nor can he retreat, and probably knows that no reinforcements can be sent to him since the demon army was dispersed into attacking both the empire and the kingdom.

      Now, the only other option is surrender, something that Io will never do judging by his temperament.

      So final option, use that enhancing item( it seems to invalidate Shiki’s weakening spell) and take as many of the enemy as possible before inevitably expiring.

    But again hyumans can easily get into hate/jealousy/etc.. look at that Illumgand kid even turned to monster by the demon. How easy would it be for the demon to turn that into something for benefit? at least Hibiki power isnt soemthing that too showing (like the eye charm). Still the demon would just kill Hibiki’s believer/friends then she’d loose her power right. I mean if the believer/friend dead, the power would disappear no?

Perhaps he only lacks the proper knowledge to use magic or his power. I think the power he received from tsukoyomi is far greater than what those 2 received. Even the God himself didn’t really know what is his power
    I hope that he becomes a deity for demons/DemiHumans/Dragons (The original species in the planet before the goddess came).

Maybe rub it in like Subaru did with Betelgeuse that he stands high enough to make deals with the Goddess herself and even threaten her to attack the hyumans if she broke her deal and he was forcefully summoned again >:D
